Applicants for medication aide certification must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete an approved training program, and pass a standardized exam within two attempts

Eligible applicants must have at least one year of experience as a certified nurse aide or licensed occupational therapy assistant in a nursing home, assisted-care living facility, or PACE program, or be a nursing student in good standing

Nursing students may receive certification through an alternative pathway after completing courses in basic nursing fundamentals, pharmacology, and medication administration with passing grades

Training programs must ensure students complete the program within 14 to 90 days from the class start date

The board may grant certification to out-of-state medication aides who hold equivalent credentials in states with equally stringent requirements; effective July 1, 2026
