Local governments may amend building codes to apply one- and two-family dwelling standards to buildings with up to six family dwellings, after consulting with a registered architect or engineer

Structures using this provision must have separate egress for each dwelling, two-hour fire-rated wall and floor assemblies between units, and cannot exceed three stories

State fire marshal is prohibited from mandating automatic fire sprinkler systems for dwellings with up to six units

Local governments retain authority to adopt their own mandatory sprinkler requirements and may permit use of NFPA 13D sprinkler standards for up to six-family dwellings
