Lieutenant Gwathney served in the U.S. Army with deployment to Korea and later in the Tennessee National Guard

Joined Knoxville Police Department in 1997, promoted to Sergeant in 2003 and Lieutenant in 2010; served as the first-ever School Resource Officer at Austin-East High School

Named Knoxville Police Department Officer of the Year in 2013 and nominated again in 2019; known as "Officer G" throughout East Knoxville

Expresses sympathy and condolences to Lieutenant Gwathney's family and directs preparation of a copy for presentation
