Military service included serving as Chief Legal Officer of the Army Training Center at Fort Bragg until 1971; education included Castle Heights Military Academy (1960), Centre College (1964), and Vanderbilt University Law School (1969)

Helped establish the 15th Judicial District Child Advocacy Center; Cumberland University created the General Tom P. Thompson, Jr. Professorship in Criminal Justice in his honor
