Participated in the Nashville Sit-In Movement in 1960 and joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) under the leadership of future Congressman John Lewis

Sustained a permanent back injury when a brick was thrown at her while seeking safety at First Baptist Church, Capitol Hill during civil rights activities

Continues to share firsthand experiences from the Civil Rights Movement as a lifelong educator and activist
