Dr. Barefoot joined Union University in Jackson, Tennessee in 1957, serving as professor of religion and Greek, academic dean, president (1987-1996), and chancellor

Under his presidency, student enrollment doubled, the Penick Academic Complex expanded, and the Hyran E. Barefoot Student Union Building was constructed

In retirement, he championed construction of "The Ethos Forum" business and engineering facility and funded the "Joyce Barefoot Lobby" in memory of his late wife

Directs that an appropriate copy of the resolution be prepared for presentation to Dr. Barefoot
