Led Texas to independence, commanding the Texas Army to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 (lasting only 18 minutes), then served as first president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator, and Governor of Texas

Only person ever elected governor of two states; opposed secession and refused to swear allegiance to the Confederacy in 1861, allowing his removal from office rather than betray his principles
