Powell played basketball and baseball at Lincoln Memorial University, graduated in 1955, and was drafted by the New York Yankees before serving in the U.S. Army

Coached men's basketball and baseball at multiple Tennessee high schools including Jonesboro High School (8 years), Sulphur Springs High School (2 years), and David Crockett High School (3 years)

Earned a master's degree in education from East Tennessee State University and served as principal at multiple Washington County schools including Asbury Elementary, David Crockett High School, and Jonesborough Elementary School

Extends sympathy and condolences to his surviving family, including three children, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson
