Born June 6, 1947, in Morristown, New Jersey; attended Memphis University School and earned a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University

Cofounded Southeastern Asset Management in 1975 and NewSouth Capital Management in 1985, where he worked for 40 years; also served in the Army National Guard

Served as board chairman for Memphis University School, ArtsMemphis, Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation Community Advisory Board, and Trezevant Manor Foundation; served as Liberty Bowl president in 1986

Expresses sympathy and condolences to his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Johnston Gillespie, his three sons, three grandchildren, and extended family
