County-wide fire departments should receive funding priority from county general funds or other revenue sources, with appropriations at least equivalent to the level of funding provided to the sheriff's department

Volunteer fire departments providing county-wide fire protection services may request priority funding from county governments when their governing board makes such a request

"Volunteer fire department" is defined as one recognized by the state fire marshal's office and classified by the Tennessee Fire Incident Reporting System (TFIRS) as a volunteer department
