Local boards of education must require school bus drivers to either submit to an annual physical and mental examination OR verify they hold a valid certificate from an FMCSA-certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners

School bus drivers choosing the federal certification option must demonstrate they are medically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle under 49 C.F.R. Part 391

Physical and mental examinations conducted under the state option must be documented on forms prescribed by the local board of education

Local boards may use Department of Safety records to verify a driver's compliance with the federal medical certification requirement

Takes effect immediately upon becoming law
