State and local government employers in Tennessee must verify work authorization of all prospective employees using the federal E-Verify program beginning July 1, 2026

Applies to all state branches, agencies, boards, local education agencies (LEAs), counties, municipalities, metropolitan governments, and other political subdivisions

Employers must maintain E-Verify documentation for each employee throughout their employment demonstrating work authorization

Attorney General may investigate violations and withhold all state funds—including grants, contracts, and state-shared taxes—from non-compliant local governments or LEAs

Local governments and LEAs are prohibited from adopting any ordinance, policy, or guideline contrary to the E-Verify requirements
