Practiced law as managing partner of the Cochran Law Firm's Memphis branch and later founded the Law Office of Julian T. Bolton; served as general counsel for the National Organization of Black County Officials

Received the Rhodes College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2009 and the City of Memphis Exemplary Service Award from Mayor A.C. Wharton in 2006
