Social media platforms must attach provenance data (metadata identifying origin, creation method, and history) to all photo, video, and audio files created on the platform or using platform-provided tools, including generative AI tools

Platforms must also attach provenance data to content posted by users when the platform can discern such data, and must retain all provenance data in compliance with established industry standards

Provenance data must indicate whether content was created or modified using generative artificial intelligence, and if so, identify the specific AI tool and its provider

Platforms must provide users with an easy method to access provenance data attached to files, either directly or through a third-party contractor

Platforms may be exempted if they provide the attorney general with clear and convincing documentation showing they lack technological capacity but are actively working toward compliance; platforms are not liable for inaccurate provenance data provided by third parties if they acted in good faith
