The 39,000-acre refuge was renamed from Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge following a secretary's order signed on March 10, 2025, by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum pursuant to an executive order by President Donald J. Trump

Honors Jocelyn Nungaray, who tragically died in June 2024 at age 12 and was known for her kindness, generosity, and love of nature, often caring for stray or injured animals

The refuge supports a wide variety of wildlife including birds, mammals, amphibians, and insects, serving as a tribute to Jocelyn's compassion for all living beings
