Dr. Shook was born in Beaumont in 1925, served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, and earned degrees from Sam Houston State Teachers College and SMU Perkins School of Theology

Served 46 years in the United Methodist Church ministry, including founding the Wesley Foundation at Tyler Junior College and pastoring multiple Texas churches in Tyler, Texarkana, Houston, and Beaumont

Held leadership positions including treasurer and superintendent of the Southwest District in the Texas Annual Conference, and was elected to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church

Married Jane Esther Lawrence in 1947 and has four daughters, 12 grandchildren, and multiple great-grandchildren; inducted into the Sons of the American Revolution in 2022 as a descendant of Daniel Boone
