Nancy Chavira, a bilingual fifth-grade math and science teacher at Johanna O'Donnell Intermediate School in Fabens, received a 2024-2025 Milken Educator Award, which includes a $25,000 prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Milken Educator Awards Forum

Chavira is one of only 42 educators nationwide selected for the 2024-2025 award and the first recipient in Fabens Independent School District history

She serves multiple roles including language proficiency assessment committee member, yearbook coordinator, UIL and Destination Imagination coach, and mentor to first-year teachers and UTEP teacher residents

Chavira holds a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from The University of Texas at El Paso and has been designated a master teacher by the Texas Education Agency

The resolution was adopted by the Texas House of Representatives on May 23, 2025, by a non-record vote
