Served as assistant football coach at Monterrey Tech University during a national championship season and as assistant athletic director at Pan American University; provided Spanish-language color commentary for a Dallas Cowboys broadcast in the 1980s

Attended law school in his late 40s and established a successful private practice in McAllen after passing the bar

Survived by his wife Angeles and eleven children; resolution adopted unanimously by rising vote of the Texas House on May 23, 2025, with the House adjourning in his memory
