At age 18, she worked in Washington, D.C. as a messenger delivering classified documents for Rheem Manufacturing Company, a military materials supplier during World War II, and later trained at St. Margaret School of Nursing

Married Charles William Northington on September 21, 1947, had three children, and moved to Texas in 1967; she supported the family while her husband completed his degree at Auburn University

Played a key role in the Texas Primary Home Care pilot program assisting elderly residents and later worked with FEMA providing disaster relief in Texas and neighboring states

Charter member of Hunters Glen Baptist Church in Plano since 1979; her family now includes 5 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren
