Sophia Varela, a fifth-grade student at Franklin Elementary School in San Antonio ISD, was selected by News-O-Matic to interview civil rights icon Sylvia Mendez during Hispanic Heritage Month

Sylvia Mendez was a plaintiff at age eight in Mendez v. Westminster, the case that paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education and the end of school segregation nationwide

Sophia is active in her school community as a member of the safety patrol guard and student council, and participates in ballet folklórico and Girls on the Run

The Texas House of Representatives congratulates Sophia Varela and extends best wishes for her continued success
