Fire departments must offer annual occupational medical examinations to all certified fire fighters at no cost to the employee

Required examination components include blood test, urine test, pulmonary function test, electrocardiogram, infectious disease screening, and cancer screening

Chest x-rays must be offered once every five years as part of the examination

Texas Commission on Fire Protection must adopt minimum standards for the examinations based on National Fire Protection Association guidelines by January 1, 2027

Fire departments may submit alternative physician-endorsed examination plans to the Commission by February 1 each year if they substantially comply with NFPA standards; compliance deadline for fire departments is February 1, 2027
