Landowners may remove fences surrounding breeder deer release sites if at least five years have passed since the most recent deer release on the property

Adjacent landowners must be notified in a department-prescribed manner before fence removal can occur

The site must have no more than a trace connection to any facility where chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected, and the department must certify no released deer have tested positive for CWD

Department certification requires either 95% confidence that CWD is not present above 5% prevalence (for sites with no CWD connection and full compliance) or 99% confidence that CWD is not present above 1% prevalence (for sites with only trace connections), both over a minimum three-year testing period

Deer released on or after April 13, 2025 must display visible identification allowing individual identification at a distance to qualify for the lower testing threshold
