School marshals may now openly carry a handgun on school premises if wearing a uniform that identifies them as a school marshal, in addition to existing options of concealed carry or storing in a locked safe

Applies to school marshals at public school districts, open-enrollment charter schools, private schools, and public junior colleges

Written regulations adopted by school boards or governing bodies must specify which carry method(s) marshals may use at their specific schools

Handguns carried or possessed by school marshals must be loaded only with frangible duty ammunition approved by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement

Takes effect beginning with the 2025-2026 school year; passed Senate 23-8 on April 24, 2025 and House 110-35 on May 6, 2025
