The agency moved to the Robert E. Johnson Building in 2000, named after the executive director who served from 1963 to 1980; current leadership includes Executive Director Jeff Archer

The governing body consists of the lieutenant governor and speaker of the House as joint chairs, along with six senators and six state representatives
