Pitts served 11 terms (22 years) in the Texas House after being elected in 1992, and chaired the House Appropriations Committee for nearly a decade

Named three times to Texas Monthly's list of the state's 10 best legislators, called "one of the truly great lawmakers of his era"

Prior to legislative service, Pitts served 14 years as a trustee on the Waxahachie Independent School District board and was president of the Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce in 1991
