Captain Bucha received the Medal of Honor from President Nixon in 1970 for leading 89 men against approximately 1,500 enemy troops near Phuoc Vinh, Vietnam during March 16-18, 1968

Bucha graduated from West Point in 1965 in the top 5 percent of his class, earned an MBA from Stanford in 1967, and served as commander of Company D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment with the 101st Airborne Division

After military service, Bucha became a veterans advocate, serving on boards including Homes for Our Troops and the Advisory Committee on Veterans Employment and Training Services at the Department of Labor

Bucha received mental health and neurological care at the West Haven VA facility and passed away there on July 31, 2024 from complications of Alzheimer's disease, donating his brain to Yale University
