Fort Pillow was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974

The 1864 battle resulted in 300-400 Union soldiers killed, with at least 300 murdered after surrendering; the Union garrison included 262 United States Colored Troops out of 557 total personnel
