Melissa Hortman served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2024, winning 10 consecutive re-elections, and became the longest-serving female Speaker in Minnesota state history after being elected Speaker in 2019

She authored Minnesota's solar standard and community solar law and led passage of legislation on paid family leave, school meals, reproductive rights, and election protections

Mark Hortman was a University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill graduate who lived in Minnesota for over 30 years; the couple met while applying to be mentors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America

The resolution honors both Hortmans' lives and service, as well as Melissa Hortman's legacy of working through political differences via civil discourse
