The National Wildlife Refuge System encompasses over 850 million acres supporting approximately 800 bird species, 220 mammal species, and more than 380 threatened or endangered species

The system receives nearly 71 million annual visits, generating over $3.2 billion for local economies and supporting 41,000 jobs, with approximately $5 returned to local economies for every $1 appropriated

More than 430 refuge units offer hunting programs and 375 offer fishing programs, supporting over 2.7 million hunting visits and 8.4 million fishing visits annually

In fiscal year 2025, nearly 24,000 volunteers contributed approximately 886,000 hours to national wildlife refuges, equivalent to 425 full-time employees
