Served 41 years in public education, rising from science teacher at Armstrong High School to Superintendent of Richmond Public Schools

Graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Union University (Class of 1950) and earned a master's degree from Howard University, with additional studies at UVA, University of Richmond, VCU, and Virginia State University

Held leadership roles in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The Links, Incorporated, and served on the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees and boards of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia

Lucille M. Brown Middle School in Richmond was named in her honor; received the Distinguished Alumna of the Year award from Virginia Union University and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Urban League of Greater Richmond
