James Woodrow McGlothlin, a Southwest Virginia business leader and philanthropist from Buchanan County, died on August 6, 2025

Co-founded United Coal Company in 1970, which grew into The United Company spanning coal, oil, gas, real estate, hospitality, and finance, including establishing Virginia's first casino, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Bristol

Graduate of The College of William & Mary (bachelor's 1962, law degree 1964) who served on its Board of Visitors from 1984 to 1993 and funded numerous campus facilities including McGlothlin Street Hall and the McGlothlin Courtroom

Major philanthropic contributions included transformative gifts to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the McGlothlin Medical Education Center at VCU School of Medicine, and support for Mountain Mission School in Grundy

The resolution directs the Clerk of the House of Delegates to present a copy to his family, survived by wife Frances and children Martha, Tara, and Gibson
