Earned a bachelor's degree in history from George Washington University and a master's degree in teaching from Harvard Graduate School of Education

Served as a preschool and elementary school teacher and as a longtime member of the Fairfax County School Board

Chaired The Cappies, a nonprofit supporting high school theater and journalism students, and was active in various Fairfax County education and civic organizations

Received the Virginia School Boards Association's Advocate in Education Award and Dranesville District Lady Fairfax honors from the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
