Graduated from Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington and earned both his bachelor's and law degrees from The College of William & Mary

Served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps and was admitted to practice before multiple federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court

Edited the Virginia State Bar Family Law Section's quarterly publication from 1991 to 2014 and received the Betty A. Thompson Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997

Practiced law with his son John at Crouch & Crouch until retiring in 2018; survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary, and family
