Joseph Towler Knox, a Richmond educator who died November 5, 2025, is honored for his decades of service teaching foreign languages and developing students' skills as linguists

Knox established the foreign language department at St. Christopher's School in 1965 and retired in 2003 after more than 40 years of service

Educated at Princeton University (French and Russian), Vanderbilt University (master's in English), and University of Richmond (master's in French), and served two years with the Office of Naval Intelligence

Cofounded a joint drama program between St. Christopher's and St. Catherine's schools and incorporated travel programs to France and Russia into his language courses

Received the title of Knight of the Order of Academic Palms from the French government for his contributions to the appreciation of French culture
