Founded Bennett's Funeral Home in 1977, later becoming A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, Inc., which was the last Black-owned business on its block of Princess Anne Street until relocating in 2007

Earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia State University, an associate degree in mortuary science from John Tyler Community College, and a master's degree from George Mason University

Served as a teacher at Stafford Middle School and A.G. Wright Middle School, and as chair of the Fredericksburg City School Board

Active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Epsilon Rho Boule' Foundation, Prince Hall Freemasonry, Virginia Morticians' Association, and Richmond Funeral Directors Association
