Served in the United States Army as a member of the special forces of the 11th Airborne Division

Worked as a machinist for Reynolds Metals and served 19 years with the Hanover County Parks and Recreation Department

Performed as lead guitarist and tenor vocalist with the bluegrass bands the Bluegrass Clippers and the Disciples, and co-authored, directed, and produced the outdoor Christmas Nativity "Why the Star?" at Slash Christian Church

Survived by his wife of 56 years, Julia, and three children: Chad, Shane, and Jared, along with their families
