The collection was discovered in 2012 at Ealey's former office at 2 East Clay Street in Jackson Ward and contains records related to Brown v. Board of Education, Massive Resistance, Interstate Highway family displacement, and the Supreme Court case Johnson v. Virginia

The Ealey Project established a deed of gift with the Library of Virginia in 2023 to ensure professional archiving, digitization, and public access to the collection

The organization's mission includes collecting oral histories from Jackson Ward residents, researching family displacement from highway construction, and creating educational exhibits

Partners include the Historic Jackson Ward Association, Richmond Free Press, Richmond Public Library, University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
