Founded Bennett's Funeral Home in 1977, later renamed A.L. Bennett and Son Funeral Home, Inc., which was the last Black-owned business on its block at 515 Princess Anne Street until relocating in 2007

Earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia State University, an associate degree in mortuary science from John Tyler Community College, and a master's degree from George Mason University

Served as a teacher at Stafford Middle School and A.G. Wright Middle School, and as chair of the Fredericksburg City School Board

Directs the Clerk of the House of Delegates to prepare a copy of the resolution for presentation to his family
