International Longshoremen's Association, Local 1248, chartered in 1928 and headquartered in Norfolk, is being commended on its 98th anniversary of service to Virginia's maritime industry

Local 1248 originated from organizing efforts by Black dockworkers in Norfolk, including the Coal Trimmers Union, which merged with the ILA to combat racial discrimination, low wages, and hazardous working conditions

The Port of Virginia achieved a record 3.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units processed in fiscal year 2021, generating 437,000 full-time jobs and $2.7 billion in state and local taxes

Local 1248 supports community initiatives including the Make a Kid Smile Christmas Bike Drive and the Vinson Covington and David D. Alston scholarship funds

The resolution directs the Clerk of the House of Delegates to present a copy to Local 1248's leadership as an expression of admiration and gratitude
