Worked 32 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator with Newport News Public Schools at multiple schools including Carver High School and Menchville High School

Served on the Newport News School Board from 2000 to 2016, including terms as vice-chairman and chairman

Held leadership roles with the NAACP Newport News branch, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Hampton Roads, and Ivy Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the deacon board
