Insurance coverage may include costs for settlement, defense, and judgment satisfaction arising from acts or omissions resulting in death, personal injury, property damage, civil rights violations, or motor vehicle claims

Providing liability insurance or self-insurance constitutes a waiver of sovereign immunity, governmental immunity, and derivative sovereign immunity up to the combined total of all insurance coverage

Damages are capped at the total insurance coverage amount unless the judgment involves gross negligence or willful/wanton misconduct, which may exceed coverage limits

Localities have no duty to defend or indemnify acts occurring outside the scope of employment, done maliciously, or excluded by policy terms
