Replaces the mandatory requirement for local pretrial services officers to "interview" defendants with a requirement to "conduct a risk assessment" of defendants detained in jails while awaiting bail hearings

Makes defendant interviews an optional service that pretrial services officers may provide when resources permit, rather than a mandatory duty

Maintains all other existing duties for pretrial services officers, including presenting pretrial investigation reports to courts, supervising defendants on pretrial release, and conducting random drug and alcohol tests

Amends Virginia Code § 19.2-152.4:3 to distinguish between mandatory risk assessments and discretionary interview services in the pretrial process
