Clinical nurse specialists who do not prescribe controlled substances or devices may practice independently without a written or electronic practice agreement under their licensed practice category

Prescribing clinical nurse specialists with fewer than 1,000 practice hours must maintain a written or electronic practice agreement with either a supervising prescribing clinical nurse specialist (with at least two years experience) or a licensed physician

After completing 1,000 hours of supervised practice, prescribing clinical nurse specialists may practice independently upon receiving an attestation from their supervising clinical nurse specialist or physician documenting the consultation period

All clinical nurse specialists must practice within their scope of training, consult and collaborate with other health care providers based on patient needs, and establish referral plans for complex cases and emergencies
