Thomas D. Harvey of Afton is commended for 41 years of service on the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, making him the longest-serving member in the board's history

First elected in a special election in November 1984 at age 30, Harvey served 10 consecutive terms as the North District supervisor and worked with 23 supervisors and eight county administrators

Led formation of the Nelson County Service Authority for water and sewer improvements and created the Nelson County Broadband Authority to bring fiber internet connectivity countywide

Oversaw construction of Tye River Elementary, Rockfish River Elementary, and Nelson Middle School, plus renovations to Nelson County High School

Contributed to Enhanced 911 implementation, public safety radio improvements, expansion of Nelson Memorial Library, and completion of the Blue Ridge Railway Trail and Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail
