James Woodrow McGlothlin, a business leader and philanthropist from Buchanan County, died on August 6, 2025, and is honored by the General Assembly for his contributions to Virginia

Co-founded United Coal Company in 1970, which grew into The United Company spanning coal, oil, gas, real estate, hospitality, and finance, including establishing Virginia's first casino, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Bristol

Graduated from The College of William & Mary in 1962 and its law school in 1964, later serving on the Board of Visitors from 1984 to 1993 and funding numerous campus buildings and scholarship programs

Made transformative gifts with his wife Frances to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, VCU School of Medicine's McGlothlin Medical Education Center (opened 2013), and Mountain Mission School in Grundy

Survived by his wife Frances and children Martha, Tara, and Gibson; his philanthropy continues through The James W. and Frances Gibson McGlothlin Foundation
