Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in Sandston, Virginia is commended by the General Assembly on the occasion of its 150th anniversary

Founded in 1875 by Robert Smyther, Major Allen, Thomas Poindexter, and Cyrus Ellyson, the church began under a brush harbor before relocating to a log cabin and then a wooden framed building in 1880

The church has been led by 18 pastors throughout its history, including current pastor Reverend Dr. Vincent T. Smith, Sr., who has served for 30 years

The congregation held an anniversary gala on October 25, 2025, followed by an anniversary worship service honoring past Sunday school superintendents

The church's mission emphasizes being "Strong in Teaching, Friendly in Fellowship, and Supersized in Love" through various outreach programs including choirs, youth groups, and health and wellness initiatives
