The Richmond Free Press published its final edition in February 2026, concluding a 34-year print run as a weekly newspaper serving Richmond's Black community

Founded by veteran journalist Raymond H. Boone, Sr., the paper published its first edition on January 16, 1992; Jean Patterson Boone took over as publisher after his death in 2014

The newspaper grew to a readership of 135,000 and circulation of more than 35,000, covering issues including economic inequality, workplace discrimination, and criminal justice reform

The publication received numerous awards from organizations including the Virginia Press Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and National Newspaper Publishers Association

The Virginia General Assembly formally commends the Richmond Free Press for its legacy of service and lasting impact on the Greater Richmond community
