John T. Casteen III served as the seventh president of the University of Virginia for 20 years (1990-2010), transforming the institution through expanded financial aid, increased diversity, and 20 new degree programs

Under his leadership, UVA's endowment grew from $488 million to $5.1 billion through private fundraising, and approximately 135 buildings were built, rebuilt, or purchased

Prior to his UVA presidency, Casteen served as Virginia Secretary of Education under Governor Chuck Robb (1982-1985) and as president of the University of Connecticut (1985-1990)

A first-generation college student from Portsmouth, Virginia, Casteen created the AccessUVA scholarship program to make higher education more affordable and accessible

The resolution directs the Clerk of the Senate to present a copy to Casteen's family following his death on March 18, 2025
