Nicholas Phillip Picerno died on October 8, 2025, and served nearly four decades in law enforcement, becoming the inaugural chief of the Bridgewater College Campus Police Department until his retirement in 2016

Picerno earned national recognition as a Civil War historian and battlefield preservationist, regarded as the foremost authority on the 10th Maine Infantry Regiment and 29th Maine Infantry Regiment

Served as the longest-serving board member in the history of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation and was honored as chair emeritus

The Senate of Virginia formally notes his passing and directs the Clerk of the Senate to present a copy of the resolution to his surviving family, including his wife Kathy of New Market and son Nicholas of North Potomac, Maryland
