School counselors must spend at least 80% of their time providing direct or indirect services to students, with no more than 20% on school support services

Direct services include face-to-face or virtual interactions supporting students' academic, career, and social-emotional development

Indirect services are those provided on behalf of students as a result of counselor interactions with students and others

School counselors must be licensed by the Standards Board for Professional Educators or hold a master's degree in guidance and counseling
